Beschreibung Cat's Tongue - Folk Art Rug - Maine Antique - 36x42 - Wool Felt - Burlap Backing
Cat's tongue rugs were made mainly in New England and Québec from the late 19th century through the mid-20th century. Judging by its condition and the materials used, I estimate this one was made 100 or so years ago. I found it in an antique shop in Maine. Rows of scalloped, tab-like, wool felt pieces (the "tongues") with pinked edges are machine stitched onto a burlap backing which was reinforced with an additional backing of patched burlap and upholstery fabric. There are some losses to the wool tongues at one end's edge which I show in detail. And the plain, blue wool center has some insect damage (little holes) which I also show in a close-up. And, I found one tear in the first burlap backing, also shown. Measures 36" wide by 42" long Weighs 3 lbs.
